The 2023 ODI World Cup ended on Sunday, November 19, with Australia getting the better of hosts India by six wickets in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both teams deserved to make it to the summit clash, but Australia prevailed on the big day like they have often done. On an individual note, there were some fantastic performances in the 2023 World Cup, none better than Indian batting star Virat Kohli, who hammered a record 765 runs in 11 innings at an average of 95.62 and a strike rate of 90.32. Rohit Sharma (597 runs at a strike rate of 125.95) also dazzled at the top of the order, while Mohammed Shami (24 wickets) and Adam Zampa (23 wickets) starred with the ball. While there were some memorable performances in the 2023 World Cup, many big names also flopped. Following the tournament's conclusion, we pick 7 big players who disappointed the most in the 2023 World Cup.
JOS BUTTLER (ENGLAND)
England came into the World Cup as defending champions and one of the strongest sides in the competition. However, they were the worst-performing side among the top nations, with only three wins from nine games, two of them coming at the fag end of the tournament. Their woes were defined by the batting struggles of their captain, Jos Buttler, who failed miserably in the tournament, not looking in any sort of form at all. Buttler managed extremely poor returns of 138 runs in nine innings at an average of 15.33 and a strike rate of 97.18. The 33-yearold’s best of 43 came in England’s World Cup 2023 opener against New Zealand. His next-best score of 27 came in England’s last match against Pakistan in Kolkata. Buttler was a far cry from the aggressive batter who has dominated opposition bowlers over the years.
