Wiggins Cements Place In History
CYCLING WEEKLY
|August 18,2016
Team pursuit gold in Rio takes Wiggo’s Olympic medal tally to eight — and to the top of the British winners’ table.
Bradley Wiggins has led the British team pursuit squad to a third gold in three Olympics and in doing so becomes the most decorated British Olympian in history, as team-mate Mark Cavendish also claimed his first Olympic medal.
Wiggins, alongside Ed Clancy, Owain Doull and Steven Burke, set a new world record for the 4km distance of 3:50.3 to edge out the Australian quartet of Jack Bobridge, Michael Hepburn, Sam Welsford and Alexander Edmondson on Saturday.
The result, and Wiggins’s place in history, hung in the balance for the whole race.
