Prior to the start of stage 15 in Millau, Sky DS Nicolas Portal was asked for his opinion on the team’s 21-year-old Colombian Egan Bernal, and particularly his hugely impressive performance on Alpe d’Huez, where he set the pace for Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome for seven kilometres. Having outlined Bernal’s many qualities, Portal pointed out that many Colombian riders have shown immense potential when they first emerge, but most fail to deliver on it. “I believe Egan is the real deal, though,” he stated.
