FT. Bidlake’s column ‘The rolling wheel’ allowed the legendary timekeeper and administrator to muse about the hot topics of the week, from Frank Southall’s huge handicap at an early season time trial in the New Forest, to riding his first century of the year now that spring was in the air.

His column about mid-ride nutrition is the most enjoyable, however. “A good deal is often written on the wisdom of waiting at least an hour after meals before restarting a journey. But I know one keen tourist who gets going directly he has finished feeding, and insists on the importance of being well and truly filled.”
