Pheasants of Bhutan
Sanctuary Asia
|October 2016
The iridescent breasts, feathered crests, colourful, velvety feathers, shimmering eyes – male pheasants entice not just the females, usually dressed in muted greys and browns, but also humans who have embarked on expeditions to capture them for the pot, fashion and now photography.
-
Millions of years of evolutionary adaptations have ensured that the female’s colouration allows her to blend into the vegetation and escape the eyes of predators, while the male’s bright looks mesmerise the picky female and make her amenable to mating. Though his obvious good looks and energetic displays make him more visible to predators, they signal excellent health and strong genes to the female.

Stop The Killer Highway Through Corbett
Even as conservationists in Assam try to minimise wild animal roadkills on NH-37, a highway that obstructs the movement of wildlife from the flooded Kaziranga National Park to the safety of the KarbiAnglong hills… across the country, another killer highway has been foisted on us by the state of Uttarakhand.
