The origin of the oft-quoted words, ‘One picture is worth a thousand words’ is uncertain, though it has been attributed to the American journalist Fred R Barnard who used it in 1927 in a trade magazine when advocating the use of graphics in advertising.

It is fascinating to see how the use of ‘word pictures’ was so dominant in the works of the psalmists and prophets of the Old Testament. Vivid pictures drawn from nature coloured their songs and prophetic utterances. It was seen supremely in the ministry of the Lord Jesus as he taught in parables and used homely illustrations drawn from his observation of the world around him. No wonder ‘the common people listened to him gladly’, because ‘no man ever spoke like this man!’ Modern preachers take note – it demands clarity, not cleverness!
