Old Firm fans abandon their traditional political allegiances

Old Firm supporters have abandoned the traditional political allegiances associated with their fanbase, according to research.

The football rivals have been perceived as holding opposing views on Scottish independence, with the majority of Rangers supporters thought to back the Union and Celtic fans wanting separation.

But Oxford Brookes University academics said there had been a “shift” in their political outlook after they interviewed 134 fans for a study published in the British Politics journal.
