Govt Puts New Schemes On Hold As Funds Falling Short

With falling revenues due to the nationwide lockdown and mounting expenses due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Narendra Modi government has put on hold all approved new schemes by various ministries and departments with the exception of Atma Nirbhar campaign and Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna for the current financial year ending on March 31, 2021.

The department of expenditure (DoE) in the ministry of finance in an office memorandum dated June 4 said: “In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, there is unprecedented demand on the public financial resources and a need to use resources prudently in accordance with emerging and changing priorities.” The order also stated that “many new proposals for ‘in-principle’ approval are being received from Ministries/Departments. This necessitated the DoE to issue fresh instructions.”
