OUR main image this week shows the moment Harold Lever learns he has been elected as the first MP for the newly-created Manchester Central parliamentary seat in the General Election of February 1974.
Labour candidate Lever polled 15,075 votes while Tory Christopher Horne was second with 5,071. Liberal candidate Michael Steed was third with 4,281 votes.
Although many had tipped the Conservatives under Edward Heath to win an overall majority, the General Election resulted in a hung parliament with Labour securing most seats.
