The Saints gave their topflight visitors a battle from the off before strikes from Harry Beautyman and Isaac Olaofe, deep in stoppage time, saw the U’s through.

“I’m delighted with the performance and result against a very good side and very good manager,” said a relieved U’s boss Matt Gray.

“It’s a tough placed to come, but we were resilient, we limited to largely long-range efforts and in the end were in control for large periods of the game.”

Sutton started the game brightly and almost took the lead inside the opening six minutes when Beautyman danced past a defender and powered towards goal, only to see his strike tipped over the bar by Michael Johnson.
