The National Games of India are being held again after a gap of seven years, with the state of Gujarat hosting them in a grand manner across six cities.

The National Games Are Back With A Bang

On September 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the 36th National Games of India open at Ahmedabad in Gujarat in a O grand ceremony that saw gala performances and a spectacular fireworks display. The opening ceremony was held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, the largest stadium in the world with a seating capacity of 132,000 spectators. Several artists from around India delighted the audience with some captivating performances. A drone show and stunning fireworks were some of the other highlights of the ceremony. This was the grandest opening ceremony the National Games have ever seen.

The Hon'ble Prime Minister's motivational words during the Opening Ceremony encouraged the sportspersons, coaches and youth to strive for higher levels of excellence, break records and create new illustrious records during the National Games.

The National Games of India which were last held in Kerala in 2015-are back after a gap of seven years. More than 7,500 athletes from 36 states/UTs are participating in the 36th National Games which will conclude on October 12, 2022. The prestigious multi-event sporting showcase will be held across six cities of Gujarat Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, and Gandhinagar. This is the first time Gujarat is hosting the National Games.

LEGACY OF THE NATIONAL GAMES

The National Games, initially called the Indian Olympic Games, were launched in 1924 to promote development of sports and create an Olympic movement in India. Over the years, participating in the National Games has become an aspiration for athletes from across the country. The Games are also a preparation for the athletes to compete in international competitions.
