Eating With Usana

Usana is the Xhosa word for ‘baby’, associated with new beginnings, birth and the joy and happiness that surround the event. This is why the Winshaw brothers, Pierre and JP, chose to name their Stellenbosch-based farming brand in 2012. ‘For us, this is a new beginning,’ says Pierre. ‘My great-grandfather, William Charles Winshaw, arrived in South Africa [from the US] in 1900. He came over as a vet with the queen’s horses. It seems he liked the country and wanted to stay on a bit. In 1904 he started making his first wine.’ The Winshaw family features a long line of winemakers, and in 1970, Pierre and JP’s father, John Winshaw, bought the property they farm on today. ‘Our dad started planting vineyards here with a few cows on the farm for personal use, so we grew up on milk and meat from the farm.’

The boys grew older and built lives outside of the family farm (both completed their BComs and spent time working for other companies and farms), but reunited and decided to turn it into a fully functioning business: Usana Farming.
