Vitamin B12 is one of the most known vitamins discussed in today's world. Why is this vitamin creating so much awareness among people? Nothing is noticed until its presence reveals itself!
Vitamin B12 is one of the vital vitamins required in our body. It has a basic chemical name as 'cobalamin'. It has various chemical forms and hence the variations in its names (eg. cyanocobalamin methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, hydroxocobalamin). It is a water-soluble vitamin and is responsible for maintenance of various important functions in our body.
Importance of Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 helps in the production of blood cells, maintenance of nerves and muscles and aids in the functioning of the brain. It also helps in stabilising body energy, breakdown of fats and proteins and elimination of toxic waste from the body. Vitamin B12 is also responsible for production of new DNA molecules (genetic material).
Required Dietary Allowance
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of Vitamin B12 for adults is 2.4 mcg, for pregnant women is 2.6 mcg and for lactating mothers is 2.8 mcg. In case upon testing there is B12 deficiency, consult your doctor before starting nutritional supplements to determine the correct dosage.
