South Africa Pays Little Tribute To Aviation Heroes

South Africa has had a number of aviation firsts and heroes in its day but for some reason, little recognition has been given to these pilots – in days gone past maybe because their feats were as part of the British forces and nowadays because they were during ‘çolonial’ times.
How many realise that the first man to land an aircraft on an aircraft carrier, a feat that at the time was near impossible, and which even now takes supreme skill, nerves of steel and is reserved for the ‘best of the best’ pilots, was a South African?
Edwin Dunning was born in South Africa in 1892 and was educated at Royal Navy Colleagues in the United Kingdom. A skilled pilot who enjoyed pioneering aviation, he rose to the rank of Squadron Commander in the Navy’s Air Service. During WW I the Navy wanted to operate aircraft from fighting ships. Getting them off the deck was relatively easy.

The Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity, is a technology demonstration model to test powered, controlled flight on another world for the first time. It hitched a ride to Mars on the Perseverance rover. Once the rover reached a suitable "airfield" location, it released Ingenuity to the surface so it could perform a series of test flights over a 30-Martian-day experimental window.
