Striking Balance With Sound Bowl Therapy
Cosmopolitan Sri Lanka
|December 2019
Lying down on the yoga mat, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and thought, “Thank goodness I scrub my feet!”
In a bid to try something new in the holistic realm, I turned to sound bowl therapy, and trust me, it’s not as easy as it may seem to close your eyes and relax.
My mind kept wandering off to what I’ll eat for lunch and the number of articles I have to write before my deadline. I was feeling vulnerable and my body felt stiff and tense.
Lying down, face-up, palms open on either side of me, a calm, soothing voice filled the room, guiding me to inhale and exhale deeply. I closed my eyes and focused on the flowers that were placed on my palms. A soft tune resonated across the room and my muscles started to relax. I felt the tension leave my body as I lay still on the cement cut floor. But, the longer I listened to the sound, the further my mind wanted to wander.
I was annoyed that my mind couldn’t stay still and kept forcing myself to concentrate on the ringing, but it had an opposite effect on me. Frustrated, I gave up and let go of trying to control my mind and almost immediately a strange feeling of serenity washed over my body. It was surprising how setting my mind free caused it to settle down.
A sound bowl was placed and played on my palm and the vibration travelled across me. I could feel the resonance from within, touching every cell in my body. The voice asked me to imagine a white light on my forehead, and the light passing through my body from head to toe, taking with it the tension, agitation, pain and every other negative energy in my body.
As my sound bowl therapy session came to an end, I opened my eyes to the brightly lit room. The vibration still lingering within my body and a feeling of clarity radiating through me.
