CLEANING UP THE EARTH’S atmosphere may sound like an absurd or senseless idea, considering the more urgent concern of clearing garbage on the planet’s surface and waters. But NASA claims that up to 500,000 pieces of space garbage currently orbit the Earth and 20,000 are at least larger than a softball. These include defunct satellites and orbiters, free-floating rockets, and paint chips.
