Affectionately known as ‘Babasaheb’, Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891.

Ambedkar’s original name was Ambavadekar, derived from the name of his native village Ambavade. But his teacher, Mahadev Ambedkar, who was fond of him, changed his surname from ‘Ambavadekar’ to his own surname ‘Ambedkar’ in school records.
Ambedkar, as a student, earned his law degree and various doctorate degrees from the London School of Economics, Columbia University.
