Trump jokes were made, diversity was celebrated and Sean Spicer made a jaw-dropping cameo at the 69th Annual Emmy Awards. Here’s what happened (Trump jokes and more Trump jokes!) on TV’s glitziest night.
Much ado about Trump:
This year’s Emmys was one big Trump roast. First-time Emmys host STEPHEN COLBERT set the tone in his opening monologue when he mocked Trump for not having won an Emmy for The Celebrity Apprentice (“’Cos unlike the presidency, Emmys go to the winner of the popular vote,” he said). Then, when ALEC BALDWIN scooped a win for his Saturday Night Live impression of the POTUS, he ribbed: “At long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy.” But not every political punchline was funny. Namely, when Stephen shockingly welcomed former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on stage to reference the comment he once made about Trump’s inauguration crowd numbers. “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period, both in person and around the world,” said Spicer.
