Both Gas-based and Diesel-based Gensets Will Cater to the Market in Their Own Way

Comment on key trends and technological developments in the genset space.

Over the last two years, the industry in India has shifted to eco-friendly gensets with lesser engine exhaust emissions thus complying with new emission norms of CPCB, popularly known as CPCB II norms introduced from 1st July 2014 for DG sets up to 800 KW. Measures have been taken to significantly reduce the acceptable levels of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which are the two main pollutants in diesel engines. Cummins had worked proactively to be ready with its new DG set models in most of the nodes to become compliant with CPCB II norms. A similar change in norms have been made by CPCB for natural gas-operated gensets, effective 1st July 2016.

Gas-based power gensets vs diesel based gensets – what makes more business sense in the midst of environment concerns?

Both gas-based and diesel-based gensets will cater to the market in their own way. With environment friendly and CPCB II compliant DG sets already in place, there are no environmental barriers to the DG set business as such. With gas supply restricted to only a few states, DG sets shall continue to offer effective stand-by power solutions for industry and other market segments and thereby participate in overall economic growth of the country.
