Steel as a material is safe, durable, environmentally-friendly, and much more. Use more of it
-
Steel structures can be significantly lighter than concrete equivalents and require less extensive foundations, reducing the environmental impact of the build. Less and lighter materials mean they are easier to move around, reducing transportation and fuel use. Steel is also durable, non-combustible, and fire-resistant. When properly designed and constructed, steel framing can preserve its structural integrity in the event of a fire and exposure to prolonged elevated temperatures.
Most steel in buildings in India are used in pre-engineered buildings. Of course, steel also plays a large role in brick-and-mortar edifices too. Puneet Mathur, business head, building solutions, Tata Bluescope Steel, says, “Pre-engineered buildings use predetermined inventory of raw materials that meet a wide range of structural and aesthetic design requirements. This flexibility allows PEBs to fulfil almost any type of building configurations, custom designs, and applications. Addressing almost all the parameters that include durability, longevity, superior finishes, environment control, lifecycle, and speedy construction, PEBs have evolved with advancement in materials used as its primary, secondary and roofing systems.”
