Daimler is on a roll. The company finished 2016 with record sales, record revenues, and record profits. It couldn’t build its high-performance AMG models fast enough to meet demand, shipments of Mercedes-Benz vans grew stronger, and the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team won its third world championship in a row, this time with a German driver, Nico Rosberg, at the wheel.
Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche ought to be feeling pretty good right now. The only problem is what happened elsewhere in 2016. In Europe, Britain’s vote to leave the European Union has jeopardized access to one of Daimler’s most important markets, and President Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric on global trade threatens to disrupt an automaker with a complex international network of factories, suppliers, and customers.
Zetsche believes Daimler is well positioned to cope with the brave new world 2016 ushered in. But he’s taking nothing for granted.
