Classic Truck
|May 2017
Who remembers the heady days when trucks were worshipped by their drivers and many were adorned with all kinds of add-on badging, custom artefacts, wheel trims and flags?
The flags many truckers displayed were proof – or evidence – of their travels. Mostly seen on trucks engaged on international transport operations, they illustrated the countries these guys had visited. At one time, it appeared to turn into a kind of challenge between truckers to see who could fit the most flags into their windscreen area. I remember seeing cabs with the entire circumference of their screens festooned with flags, which impressed a lot of enthusiasts and wannabe truckers if no-one else. Of course, it wasn’t long before you saw tippers and high street delivery trucks with the flags of various nations hanging in their windscreens. They obviously hadn’t travelled to those destinations, but it made their trucks look good and the drivers proud!
