BMW R1250RT Sport Free At Last

|August 2020
All my plans for the 2020 Buffalo Rally were finalised. Accommodation booked and paid, routes plotted, a good crew to ride with and, the crimson cherry on top, my ride to Mossel Bay was a gorgeous Mars Red BMW R1250RT Sport. In October 2019 I was invited to the launch of the of the R1250R, RS and RT in the Lowveld and had the absolute pleasure of riding the RT Sport on some of the best biking roads in the country.
The only issue was my saddle time on the RT launch was far too short. The route to the Buffalo and back was a 3000km lap and I was keenly anticipating a great weekend on the RT. After all it’s the motorcycle which, year after year, is hailed as the best long distance touring machine on the planet. And then COVID-19 hit and the world changed. The BMW demo fleet was mothballed, inter-provincial travel was outlawed and we were all warned to stay home or risk being chucked in the slammer. I rode my bikes to the shops but as the days turned into weeks and cabin fever set in these short rides were less and less satisfying. All I wanted was a good long day in the saddle. After many miserable months The Fearless Leader declared the country to be on Level 3 Lockdown and shortly thereafter, on a glorious day, my phone rang. Danie Human from Motorrad said the magic words “Howie, you booked the RT. When may I deliver it to you?” The RT was delivered the very next day!
