Carlos Blanco Artero – Figurative Abstraction

Issue #60 June 2021

My work could fit within a contemporary figuration but at the same time within abstraction. I have several lines of work, which often converge, and others go their own way.

"My painting has been transformed in these past years from a new figuration to a more expressive, gestural painting, where the figurative element is still but more blurred. My work could fit within a contemporary figuration but at the same time within abstraction. I have several lines of work, which often converge, and others go their own way. I have always had the feeling that there would come the point where I would have to choose a clear path; go deeper to the direction of abstraction or figuration. However, knowing the work of George Condo, and more explicitly seeing his work Rush hour at the MET in New York, showed me that figuration and abstraction could coexist perfectly in the same artwork, like painting and drawing.

George Condo influenced me profoundly, and at that moment, I realized that Condo had achieved what I was looking for, and starting to work from there was the beginning of everything.
