Set in the quaint heritage village of Khotachiwadi, Mumbai's newest gallery celebrates the past, present, and future of Indian design.
In previous lives, the Crasto bungalow in Mumbai's Khotachiwadi village has raised a few generations, housed a printing press, and functioned as a gym. This summer, it received a fresh coat of cobalt blue and was transformed into 47-A, a gallery dedicated to design. After spending a decade exhibiting works at the "intersection of art and design" at Colaba art gallery Chatterjee & Lal, co-founders Mortimer Chatterjee and Tara Lal say they "sensed a need for a deeper engagement with design". To help realize their vision, the duo found a kindred spirit in friend and collaborator Srila Chatterjee of Baro Market, an online platform dedicated to Indian craftsmanship. "Having a gallery gives designers of all kinds a platform that is taken more seriously," she says.
