Henry Ford’s first pickup was a converted Model T. Today, the Ford Ranger, which is available in South Africa in 42 variations, is a top seller. By Jake Venter.
This is the first in a series of profiles on motor manufacturers and the bakkies they produce to help farmers decide on which brand to buy. In many cases, of course, a farmer’s final decision will also depend on how reliable the local dealer is.
THE COMPANY
The Ford Motor Company was founded by Henry Ford in Detroit on 16 June 1903. It is currently the world’s fifth-largest automotive company and the largest that is still family-controlled. The company at one stage owned Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar and Aston Martin, but has since sold these marques. Mercury, their middle-range model, was discontinued in 2011.
Henry Ford “put the world on wheels”. His company produced more than a million Model T cars annually for many years, and by 1922 every second car in the world was a Model T. The Ford Motor Company was also the first to mass-produce a V-8 engine.
