The latest wheat production estimate for the 2018/2019 season is about 1,8 million tons, which means that South Africa will have to import about 50% of the country’s wheat demand, according to Mariana Purnell, general manager at Agbiz Grain.
“But our own wheat quality is far superior to any of the wheat that is imported. The biggest challenge [for South Africa at present] is the successful implementation of the wheat breeding and technology levy,” she said.
Purnell said that to ensure the successful implementation of the levy it was important for all role players to report the cultivar names of all wheat deliveries in terms of the agreement with the South African Cultivar and Technology Agency (SACTA).
