CLAMOR IN THE CHURCH
Across the globe, women’s voices have started to clamor for greater participation not just in church tasks but in its governance, pastoral and theological reflection. Pope Francis, in his jovial openness to the different challenges facing the Church, has given some signs that change is underway while, at the same time, upholding the official teachings of the Church. For some, this is a disappointing position but others await in hope what the ‘pope of surprises’ may still do.
In Asia, as in other corners of the world, women theologians have turned to God’s Word for inspiration. Some leading women in the Scripture, who struggled with different kinds of oppression, have become a revelation to women of today, not only as a ‘window’ to the ancient biblical world and the struggle of women at that time but, more so, to eventually reclaim their place in the Church today.
Will the clamor of these women in the Church lead to doctrinal and pastoral changes? This remains to be seen.
