A Heart that Gives
The Philippine General Hospital is the biggest tertiary hospital in the country, serving 500,000 poorest-of-the-poor patients every year. It houses 1,500 beds, 500 of which are for private or paying patients, coming not only from Metropolitan Manila or the National Capital Region but from all over the country.
However, PGH funds are not enough to cover all the medical needs of the patients, 98 percent of whom are indigent. Although some revenues are derived from the private wards, these are also not enough to fill in the huge budgetary gap for the diagnostics and treatments of the close to a thousand indigent patients who flock to PGH monthly.
In this issue, H&L features the PGH Medical Foundation and Sagip Buhay Medical Foundation and their critical role in raising necessary philanthropic support for indigent patients of PGH and establishing lifelong relationships with its donors.
It encourages us to realize that as doctors, nurses, health care givers, and patients, we can do something beyond attending to the physical ailments of our indigent patients. That if we give our share in addressing the financial constraints of those who need to have a life-saving procedure or medicine, we can extend, touch, and make a difference in their lives.
