The sensation of hunger is an immediate biological signal that impacts human physiology. However, there is a critical distinction between this natural bodily response and the weaponized condition of starvation. When the basic need for sustenance is systematically denied or manipulated on a mass scale, individual hunger escalates into a sociopolitical crisis. Rather than remaining a simple physical narrative, starvation—whether understood as a strategic idea or a tangible phenomenon—has been instrumental in shaping numerous historical and social trajectories.

Historically, starvation often served as a brutal tool of colonialism, driving vast populations toward near-extinction to enforce control, while at other times, it manifested as the calculated result of political disintegration and engineered inequality. In response to these human-made catastrophes, many religious and social institutions have intervened, prescribing ethical remedies and establishing concrete communal actions to counter the cruelty of deprivation. Consequently, starvation holds a profound, albeit dark, transformative capacity in the history of humankind.

In this context, the current issue of The Evident magazine engages in a comprehensive discussion on starvation, ranging from its harrowing historical narratives to its remedial means. Most interestingly, this edition fathoms the spiritual aspects of enduring hunger and attempts to deconstruct the phenomenon through a critical, decolonial perspective.
