Στα νοτιοδυτικά παράλια της Μεσσηνίας, βρίσκεται η γραφική κωμόπολη της Μεθώνης που βρέχεται από τα νερά του Ιονίου Πελάγους. Παλαιότερα ήταν ένα εξέχον και σημαντικότατο λιμάνι στην προστασία του οποίου κατέφευγαν τα καράβια από και προς την Aνατολή. Ιδιαίτερα στους μεταχριστιανικούς αιώνες αποτελούσε σταθμό για τους προσκυνητές προς τους Αγίους Τόπους. / The picturesque town of Methone, which is washed by the Ionian Sea, is located at the southwest coastline of Messenia. In older times, it used to be an eminent and significant port and it served as a shelter for the ships that were travelling to and from the East. Especially, during the early byzantine centuries it was a station for the pilgrims that were heading to the Holy Land.
