In one of the recent editions, we covered an article on whether robots should be granted citizenship. Did you Know that river in New Zealand by the name Whanganui River which is revered by the ethnic Maori residents has been granted the same legal rights and status as human beings. A forest nearby the river is a legal person too. The legal principle that corporation is a legal person and a living tree is not is drummed into law schools for long but based on above one may ask - if rivers can stand in court rooms, why a tree cannot? Not just that elephants have even made it to trials arguing that they have the sense of self-awareness, are independent in expressing empathy towards others and hence qualify to be legal 'persons'. Commentators argue that archaic legal systems call for modernization while legislators and judiciary constantly aim at evaluating and reworking the fine balance between citizen rights and governmental actions.
