£2.9Million Fund To Change Slavery Scot Street Name

Canadian firms named after Scots politician Henry Dundas, who had links to the slave trade, will benefit from a £2.9million rebranding fund.

It comes as the name of a main thoroughfare in Toronto, Dundas Street, is set to be changed – once a new monicker is agreed on – after more than 14,500 people campaigned earlier this year.

The name change will extend to train stations, street and highway signs and parking facilities.

The council in Toronto will also offer funding to local businesses which use the Dundas name – despite a poll finding 61 per cent of people were opposed to the change.

Dundas played a key role in delaying the abolition of the British empire’s transatlantic slave trade.
