About a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions are linked with food.
A diet is considered sustainable when food consumed is produced in a way that protects the environment and has a low impact on biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural resources. A sustainable diet is one that is nutritionally adequate, safe, healthy, culturally acceptable, and economically affordable.
Beyond environmental concerns, the current food system also creates multiple unhealthy food choices which are detrimental to our physical health, decreasing life expectancy and leading to various chronic diseases.
Eating healthy and sustainably goes hand-in-hand. Below are a few tips for sustainable eating habits.
1. EAT MORE VARIETY
75% of the world’s food supply comes from roughly 12 plants and five animal species. Greater diversity in one’s diet is important, as the lack of variety in agriculture is both harmful for nature and a threat to food security. Eating local, seasonal “less popular” food instead of eating the familiar supply would help this matter greatly.
