How Bangladesh’s social media got divided over a viral video
A new short film which was uploaded recently has been stirring up the social media pot as 2018’s first Bangladeshi viral video, dividing opinion like no other topic. The short film, titled “Boishommo” (Bangla for discrimination), tell the story of a protagonist (Sabbir Arnob) sitting with his friends at an outdoor cafe near Dhanmondi Lake. The short film deals with how he fumes over the sight of a young girl smoking in public, going over personally to vent his “righteous beliefs” on her, citing his own version of cultural ideals, which has sparked outrage ever since.
With a 12 minute 41 second run time, it also adds nuances of advising the audience to record girls smoking in public and posting them on Facebook so that they can be shamed into never repeating the “offense” again.
Directed by young filmmaker Hayat Mahmud Rahat, he was forced to remove the video from YouTube and all other social media websites after viewers expressed their outrage and disgust over the treatment of the message, which by itself, many have complained to be highly flawed and sexist.
