Caroline Helder travels far off the beaten track on a group trip to unexplored Kazakhstan

Have you ever wanted to explore somewhere that is genuinely undiscovered? Even among the well-travelled, Kazakhstan isn't the first place that springs to mind for a holiday. This vast former Soviet republic – the world's ninth largest country, but with a population not much larger than Holland – sees few tourists. Russian and Kazakh are the main languages and English is sparse. But there's something rewarding about travelling somewhere relatively unexplored, where you can't rely on everyone understanding you. So with adventure in mind, I decided to take the plunge on an expert-led group tour.
