When you have a bad back, what do you do? If you turn to one of the most popular treatments for lower back pain you might not be helping. New research has shown that almost all the top treatments, including paracetamol, steroids and manipulation, are ineffective. Scientists at the University of New South Wales found that only one in 10 treatments for back pain actually made a difference.
So what will help?
The first thing to understand is that back problems are rarely due to any serious disease or damage,' says Woman’s Weekly GP Dr Gill Jenkins. ‘It often gets better on its own, improving within a few weeks.' So top advice is often to let your back heal itself and in the meantime manage any pain with ibuprofen — the only thing in the Australian study that seemed to make a difference. Try tablets or localised creams to rub in. ‘Local heat or cold pads, massage or physical therapies may help,’ says Dr Gill. ‘Local heat or cold packs ease muscle tension.’ And keep mobile. ‘Activities such as walking, swimming, yoga and Pilates can ease back pain,’ says Dr Gill. ‘Or try localised/specific exercises.’ Visit backcare.org.uk or search NHS Live Well for tips.
