Michelle Scott thought her cat was out climbing trees, so the truth came as quite a surprise

For months, Michelle Scott’s son, Sonny, had been pestering her for a kitten. They already had a 15-year-old cat called Kit, who Sonny adored, but he’d never had a kitten.

One day in September 2022, after seeing an ad for a litter of kittens who were in need of new homes, Michelle, now 51, and her husband, Mark, 49, gave in. Little Kiki was just two weeks old when they first went to meet her, and Sonny was immediately in love. A few weeks later, as a present for his eighth birthday, they brought Kiki home. But Michelle never expected the tiny grey and white cat to become so attached to Sonny, and then through him, to his school!

Sonny and Kiki very quickly developed a strong bond and Kiki started following him around the house. ‘Whenever he had friends over, Kiki would follow them upstairs and sit with them,’ recalls Michelle, from Glasgow. ‘I'd go up, and Kiki would be playing with them and trying to interact with her paw.

Kiki meowed to go out every morning and disappeared for most of the day. Michelle assumed she was sniffing leaves and climbing trees like other cats. Then, one day, Sonny revealed that Kiki had turned up at school. As it was a short walk from the house and next to woodland, Michelle thought it was a one-off, but soon realised Kiki was making the journey every day.
