I cried at the end of Grantchester'

He’s made a career out of playing gruff, buttoned-up men who find it hard to show their feelings, but actor Robson Green says he couldn’t be more different and that when it came to filming his final Grantchester scenes, he burst into tears.

The 10th and penultimate series of the much-loved show begins screening this month. Robson has been with it since the start, so saying goodbye was very much the end of an era.

‘I've got this one brown suit and I’ve worn it in every scene, in every episode, in every series,’ he reminisces. ‘When I hung it up for the last time I burst into tears.

‘I've done a lot of drama series — I've done hundreds of hours of prime-time drama — and I've never done a 10th series of anything. One of the things that brings me back is I know I’m going to have a good time. When we finished filming the final series I said a few words to everybody about how beautiful the experience had been.

image‘I went back to that joyous day when they called me and basically gave me an opportunity that has been my road to Damascus — it’s made me a better person.
