A weekend in MERSEA ISLAND

Fringed with family resorts, quaint cottages and, of course, beachfront views, Mersea Island has a distinct holiday feel. Measuring just five miles long by two miles wide, it's easy to explore over a weekend. But don't underestimate this dinky destination - whether you're coming with children, as a couple or with friends in tow, you'll find plenty to do.

Rich history

Mersea's story stretches all the way back to prehistoric times. Farming and fishing have been key industries, with oyster harvesting dating to the Roman era. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Mersea was a haven for smugglers, due to its remote location. The island was also used for observation posts during both world wars, while West Mersea town's development as a popular seaside resort began in the early 20th century. Tourists continue to enjoy the community's rural charm, water-based activities and delicious seafood to this day.
