As she shoots for the stars with her ninth novel, the prolific author reflects on working with the actress on Daisy Jones & The Six

Atmosphere, your ninth novel, is a departure from your previous books – it's a love story between two female NASA astronauts, set in the 1980s. How did you come up with the premise?

I think I just felt like it was time for a big, epic love story. Alot of times when I finish one book, I start to feel a call toward another book and there was just a feeling I had that I wanted to break my own heart a little bit. I’m often drawn to stories about women thriving in male-dominated spaces, and the Space Shuttle program seemed like a pretty good example of that.

This is your first thriller – would you call it that?

Sure, I think that’s fair. Things get pretty hairy from early on. The books I find the most joyful and fun to read are ones that it feels like they’re pulling me towards the ending, that I can’t stop turning the pages. I wanted to give that feeling to people.
