Keen to know if ChatGPT can transform her life, Rachel Tompkins, 45, puts it to the test

WOULD YOU LET AI ORGANISE YOUR LIFE?

These days you can’t turn on the TV or listen to the radio without hearing about AI and the fact it is taking over our lives. But I'll be honest, my knowledge of ChatGPT is slim to none. An online search tells me it’s a generative AI program, which basically means it generates human-like conversations. Not only can it answer questions, it can assist with solving problems, translating languages, making suggestions, planning a holiday or event, even organising your personal life. Intrigued to find out how it could make my life better, or worse, I decide to spend a week letting it take over. Here's how I got on...

LIFE IN PLASTIC

When my son, Rory, 12, tells me AI can turn me into an action figure I'm confused. Then he shows me a picture of what looks like a toy doll in a box, which looks very similar to one of his friends. He helps me use Microsoft Copilot, an AI companion, and I start by typing a detailed description of what I look like. Then I add a few more details, including about being a mum to Rory and his brother Seb, nine, and loving chocolate. Within seconds, a picture appears of a cartoon-type action figure of myself, packaged in a box with my two sons. It looks as if it is on sale in a toyshop. The boys think it is hilarious and even though it is a bit pointless, it’s just a bit of silly fun. If life in plastic is good enough for Barbie it’s good enough for me!
