From heart disease to arthritis, here’s what they might be trying to tell you…

Sandal season is very nearly here, but if your feet have been tucked up in socks and boots for the whole winter, you might not have had a good look at them in a while. Though we don’t often spend ages studying our feet, they can reveal a lot about what might be going on in less visible parts of our body.

‘Changes in skin or nails could stem from circulation or nutrient issues, infections or structural problems such as arthritis,’ says orthopaedic therapist Andrew Nasr (rudis.com). ‘Swelling might point to cardiovascular or kidney function, and appearance shifts could relate to neurological concerns. But don’t panic! Our feet go through a lot, and small changes don’t always mean something is wrong.’ Strip off those socks and take a look.

…MIGHT BE A SIGN OF HEART DISEASE 

Suddenly no need to shave that big toe? Foot hair that’s disappeared could be a sign of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) – the narrowing or blockage of the vessels in the legs.
