Unable to get through the colder months without coughing? You're not alone one in five Brits develop a cough in winter, and it’s one of the most common reasons for GP consultations at this time of year. Plus, the number of us visiting A&E with a cough is continuing to rise. But, don't worry - you can help yourself at home with these tips.
SUCK ON DARK CHOCOLATE
A remedy we can get behind! Melt one to two squares of 70% dark chocolate slowly in the mouth to coat the throat, says Dr Rimas Geiga (itsmeandyou.co. uk). 'Dark chocolate has higher levels of theobromine, which dampens the cough reflex, while the melting process reduces irritation.'
Take a steamy bath or shower
'Steam moistens the airways, loosens mucus, relaxes muscles and dampens the cough reflex,' says Dr Deborah Lee (doctorfox. co.uk). Add a couple of teaspoons of Vicks VapoRub (£6.75, Boots) to a bowl of hot water. 'It's shown to reduce cough symptoms.'
STOCK UP ON GINGER & HONEY
Thanks to its antioxidants, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, honey helps reduce cough frequency and severity. 'Ginger can dilute and dry out mucus, ease a sore, inflamed throat and reduce cough symptoms,' explains Dr Lee. Add grated ginger to hot lemon and honey and sip it slowly.
Beware of irritants
'Voice overuse, strong perfumes, cold, dry air and laughter can make a dry cough flare up,' says Dr Naheed Ali (veraclinic.net). 'To fully resolve a dry cough, preventing irritants is just as important as treatment.'
