Winter wonderland
The Australian Women's Weekly
|August 2025
With its Christmas markets, scenic alpine routes and cosy mountain towns, Switzerland is a seasonal escape straight from a storybook.

City culture & alpine charm
First stop into my Swiss adventure is Zürich which offers a perfect blend of modern sophistication and cosy traditions, especially during the festive season. Nestled beside the glistening Lake Zürich and framed by snow-dusted Alps, it transforms into a magical escape during winter. We wander through the enchanting Christmas markets scattered across the city from the opulent Christkindlimarkt inside the Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) - it is one of the largest indoor markets with its central 15-metre tall conifer dripping with Swarovski crystal ornaments - to the storybook setting of the Old Town's Niederdorf. Partaking in regular refreshment stops, I now have a much greater appreciation of glühwein as it makes total sense when the average daily city temperature during winter is four degrees!

It's not surprising the adventurous spirit within shows itself when a torch-lit winter hike in the nearby Uetliberg or along the many forest trails is on offer. I was imagining I was either a warrior or Olympic torchbearer, carrying a flaming torch, walking single file to illuminate the snow-covered path. If you have average fitness, it's an unforgettable guided evening walk.
