I've been musing recently on the politics of hair. Why on earth do we fuss about hair so much – too much hair, not enough, the wrong colour, the wrong texture, too curly, too straight, not enough in the right place, too much in the wrong place.

Entire industries are built around the growing, shaping and the removal of hair. How have we invested these billions and billions of follicles with so much power? The average human body has about five million hairs that carpet us all over – apart from the palms of our hands, the soles of our feet and our lips. That's a lot of hair to care about.
