THE WHY, the WHICH & THE wardrobe

Sumendra Chetty

What sparked your love for fashion?

It started with an appreciation for craft and cultural storytelling, rather than fashion in the traditional sense. My first true appreciation was for my mom's sari collection: the sequins, the silk, the colours. I've always been drawn to how something is made, who made it, and the cultural context behind it. Over time, that curiosity grew into an understanding of fashion as a form of communication how clothing can carry identity, memory and meaning. That's what has stayed with me.

Do you have any sentimental pieces in your wardrobe?

I tend to hold on to pieces that are tied to a moment. Some are garments I've acquired through my work with designers - pieces that represent a relationship or a milestone. Others are more personal, like items passed down or bought during significant trips. Those are the ones I'll keep forever.

What are some of the trends, colours or styles you look forward to wearing this winter?

I'm drawn to more expressive silhouettes, particularly balloon or barrel-leg trousers, which bring a sculptural yet wearable feel. I love pairing fuller shapes with silk pieces, and adding knitwear to create a balance. Locally, this translates beautifully in natural fibres like mohair and merino, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and texture as seen in the Helon Melon collection. In terms of colour, I'm leaning towards deep, warm tones - chocolate, oxblood, emerald green-layered with neutrals.

What are some markers of good quality?

FRIDAY ON MY MIND

We know it’s Friday in this house because three things happen: The first is, a tiny aeroplane flies around the City Bowl, trailing a giant banner advertising Mavericks, the well-known local strip club ‘Glamorous Venue for Exotic Dance, Private Functions, Bachelor Parties and so much more...’ A friendly reminder to their punters that their next lap dance is due. The frequency seems to fall somewhere between teeth-flossing and mammograms. Good times, guys!
