Beyond Buzzwords to a Sustainable Future

- by Anirban Dasgupta

GREEN HOSPITALITY

In recent years, the hospitality industry has undergone a significant transformation, driven by a growing awareness of environmental challenges, shifting customer expectations, and an enhanced sense of social responsibility. At the heart of this transformation is the concept of Green Hospitality—a holistic approach that integrates eco-friendly principles into every aspect of hotel management and guest experience. No longer just a decorative term tossed into annual reports, green hospitality today is a critical necessity, shaping business practices, brand reputations, and even guest choices across the globe.

What is Green Hospitality?

Green hospitality, also often referred to as sustainable or eco-friendly hospitality, encompasses the adoption of environmentally responsible practices throughout the operations of hotels, resorts, and restaurants. This approach aims to minimize negative impacts on the environment and local communities while delivering exceptional guest experiences. It encompasses a wide range of initiatives: efficient energy and water use, waste reduction and recycling, sourcing local and organic products, responsible construction and design choices, and fostering awareness among guests and staff.

From Mere Trend to Imperative

Not long ago, green hospitality was simply a marketing trend, a label attached to a handful of boutique eco-resorts catering to niche nature-loving clientele. Today, that is no longer the case. Consumers—from business travellers to luxury holidaymakers—are increasingly informed and vocal about where they spend their money.

A GREEN WARRIOR in the heart of the Thar

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Jitendra Solanki during a training programme on ecotourism organised by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and was instantly taken in by his deep love for the desert landscape. His knowledge of Rajasthan's wildlife, its resilient people, and the delicate balance that defines this unique ecosystem was truly inspiring. What stood out most was his passion for showcasing a different, more responsible side of Rajasthan, one that celebrates its natural heritage and communities with equal respect and sensitivity. It is for this; we celebrate him today as a Green Warrior.
