A JOURNEY INTO THE HEART OF REAL INDIA RURAL TOURISM
Travellers' World
|April - May 2023
United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has defined Rural Tourism as "a type of tourism activity in which the visitor's experience is related to a wide range of products generally linked to nature-based activities, agriculture, rural lifestyle/culture, angling and sightseeing." In tune with the definition and vision of Rural Tourism, the importance and the potential of the vertical cannot be more significant than in the perspective of a country like India
-
The latest census has given an official figure of 6 lakh 40 thousand 9 hundred and thirty villages in India. The land of amazing biodiversity, varied cultures and unique lifestyles make India a country with unlimited scope of Rural Tourism. In the recent time when the post covid era has re-emphasised the importance of a healthy and natural environment all over the globe, Rural Tourism has shown high promise in India. Due to its complementarity with other economic activities, its contribution to GDP and job creation, and its ability to encourage the dispersal of demand in time (against seasonality) and across a larger territory, rural tourism has a strong potential to support local economic growth and social change.
India's diversified and lively culture, handicrafts, folk arts, festivals, and fairs provide great promise for rural tourism.
Rural Tourism in India - an Opportunity to Promote Sustainable and Responsible Tourism.

A GREEN WARRIOR in the heart of the Thar
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Jitendra Solanki during a training programme on ecotourism organised by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and was instantly taken in by his deep love for the desert landscape. His knowledge of Rajasthan's wildlife, its resilient people, and the delicate balance that defines this unique ecosystem was truly inspiring. What stood out most was his passion for showcasing a different, more responsible side of Rajasthan, one that celebrates its natural heritage and communities with equal respect and sensitivity. It is for this; we celebrate him today as a Green Warrior.
