WHY ABU DHABI IS THE PERFECT DIWALI GETAWAY FOR INDIAN TRAVELLERS

From grand cultural landmarks to family-friendly fun, seamless travel, and special festive offers, Abu Dhabi is inviting Indian travellers to celebrate Diwali in style this year
-

Every autumn, Indian cities light up with the warm glow of diyas and the crackle of fireworks, marking the arrival of Diwali: a season of joy, togetherness, and renewal.
But increasingly, Indian families are looking beyond their own borders for ways to combine festive traditions with unique travel experiences. This year, Abu Dhabi is making a strong case for itself as the ultimate Diwali destination, blending cultural familiarity with global sophistication.
It is no secret that Abu Dhabi has been deepening its ties with India's outbound travel market. Indian visitors already make up a significant proportion of the emirate's tourism figures, and the bond between the two cultures is visible in everything from the abundance of vegetarian dining options to the easy availability of Hindi-speaking guides. Yet Diwali offers a special opportunity for Abu Dhabi to showcase its warmth and inclusivity, and for Indian travellers to see the emirate in a different light.
WHY VISIT?
The BAPS Hindu Mandir is one of the most striking additions to the cityscape in recent years. This magnificent temple stands as a symbol of cultural inclusivity and religious harmony. For many Indian visitors, it is more than an architectural marvel; it is a space where Diwali prayers and rituals can be performed just as they would be at home.
Combined with Abu Dhabi's other spiritual spaces, from serene mosques to tranquil churches, the temple adds to the sense that the city embraces diverse faiths with genuine respect.

THE SOLE MEMORY
I WAS LOOKING FOR A SHOE shop to get my favourite pair repaired. The August Texan heat had loosened the sole on one of them. In other times, I would have thrown the pair away rather than go through the trouble of finding a repair shop. But I loved these shoes and searched for someone to bring them back to life.

THE BORDERLESS GURU
THE AIR IS THIN, TINGED with the scent of juniper. A swift wind whips through faded prayer flags, while glaciers carve valleys and jagged peaks pierce a sky the colour of lapis lazuli. Standing here, the idea of political borders feels almost absurd. Maps may mark out India, Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibet, but the landscape itself refuses to be partitioned. These mountains carry a shared heritage, embodied by a single figure who transcends frontiers: Padmasambhava, the Lotus-Born. Known as Guru Rinpoche, the Precious Master, Padmasambhava brought Buddhism to Tibet in the eighth century. His image gazes out from gompas across the Himalayas-wrathful yet compassionate, eyes filled with the wisdom of lifetimes. To see him only as a missionary is to miss the larger truth.
